By six in the evening your eyes feel dry, your forehead is tight, and everything on the screen has a faint blur around it. If that sounds like your day, you are not imagining it - and you are not alone.
What is actually happening
Three things, mostly.
You blink less. Reading a screen cuts your blink rate by roughly half, so the tear film that keeps the surface of your eye smooth breaks up. That is the grittiness and the blur.
Your focus never moves. The muscle that focuses your eye holds one distance for hours, the way your arm would ache holding a glass at the same height all day.
The room is working against you. Air conditioning dries the air, overhead light bounces off the screen, and the screen is often brighter than everything around it.
Seven things that actually help
1. The 20-20-20 habit
Every 20 minutes, look at something about 20 feet away for 20 seconds. It lets the focusing muscle relax. Setting a recurring reminder is the only way most people stick to it.
2. Blink on purpose
A few slow, complete blinks every so often spreads the tear film again. Sounds trivial; it is the single cheapest fix on this list.
3. Match your screen to the room
If your screen glows like a torch in a dim room, turn it down. It should look about as bright as a sheet of white paper on your desk.
4. Raise the screen, drop the glare
Top of the monitor at or just below eye level, and the screen at right angles to a window rather than facing it. A laptop stand does more for your neck than any cushion.
5. Cool or warm compress at the end of the day
A cooling eye patch calms puffiness and the hot, tired feeling after a long day. A warm one helps when your eyes feel dry and heavy. Ten minutes is enough.
6. Treat the headache early
The ache that starts at the temples and creeps to the back of the neck is usually posture and eye strain together. A cooling roll-on on the temples, and standing up for two minutes, beats waiting until you need a tablet.
7. Remember your skin is on screen duty too
Indoor air and long hours leave skin dull and dehydrated, and most people who work indoors skip sunscreen entirely even though they sit near windows. A light mist with SPF, and an under-eye cream at night, take under a minute.
If you would rather not assemble all of that
We built the ScreenEase Hamper around exactly this list: a heating and cooling eye patch, a headache and migraine roll-on, an under-eye cream, a screen mist with SPF 30, and 30 cards that nudge you to take the break you keep skipping. Rs 1,399, free shipping across India.
It also makes a good gift for the person in your life who answers emails at 11pm. If that is a whole team, see corporate gifting.
